Hey All of you YA Lovers Around the Globe ~

As you may have picked up on, Young Adult Books, or YA–it’s readers & writers & communities—are spinning webs around the world connecting us in new ways. As a way to appreciate that, I’ve asked some International and American authors to share what that means to them. This week and next will be filled with their responses! We would love to hear YOUR responses too! Either comment below or send me your response on my contact page. Read the original Global YA post here.

Today’s Global YA Author is the Illustrious Ms. Pintip Dunn. She’s a New York Times bestselling author of YA fiction, a RWA RITA® winner for Best First Book, and author of The FORGET TOMORROW series * THE DARKEST LIE * GIRL ON THE VERGE, and many more coming up!

So, Pintip, What does Global YA mean to you?

I am a Thai-American girl who grew up in small town Kansas. I went to Thailand every summer to visit my grandma and the rest of my extended family, often spending weeks or even months there. As a teenager, I felt caught between cultural worlds and wasn’t sure how I fit into either. I wasn’t quite Thai enough, nor was I American enough.
This feeling is precisely at the center of my YA thriller, GIRL ON THE VERGE, which is about a Thai-American girl struggling to find her identity . . . and what happens when a stalker tries to steal that identity.
Even when I’m not writing an #ownvoices novel, however, I would still classify my books as global YA. The themes and human struggles I write about are universal, and I don’t believe they are specific to one country or another.

In addition to the United States, my FORGET TOMORROW series has sold in four other countries — France, Brazil, Turkey, and Mexico with distribution to Latin America. I’ve received some wonderful messages from my readers in these other countries, and they are largely the same as the notes that I receive from my U.S. readers. This shows me that the same elements are resonating with my readers, no matter which country they’re from!
